The Genesis Flood: God's Judgment and Salvation
The stories about the Genesis Flood and Noah's Ark are two of the
best-known and most ridiculed stories in the Bible. These stories
highlight two aspects of God that are a constant theme throughout the
Bible, God's judgment and salvation. God hates sin as much He loves us.
At the same time God was pronouncing judgment on a sinful world by
means of the Flood, He was providing a means of salvation with the Ark,
to those who would listen. The same thing that Jesus did when He was on
earth. The importance of the Flood in understanding the true history of
the world cannot be overstated. The geologic record tells us either
that there was a great flood that quickly buried billions of creatures
inside thousands of feet of sediment or that over millions of years,
billions of creatures were slowly buried inside that sediment. The
story of the rocks is the story of the earth. Which story you believe
is going to determine your attitude toward the Bible.
Most of those who seek to compromise God's Word with worldly ideas
start out by compromising on the age of the earth. What they so often
say is that the age question is a minor issue and shouldn't be a source
of controversy. What they fail to acknowledge is that when someone
promotes an age for the earth of billions of years, they are denying
the reality of the Flood and promoting the idea that death came into
the world before the sin of Adam and Eve.
Those who embrace an old earth must ultimately reject an historical
basis for the Bible. Yet Jesus tells us that there was a Flood. But as the days of Noe (Noah) were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man (Jesus) be,
Matthew 24:37. Paul makes numerous references to death coming into the
world due to the sin of the first Adam and salvation from the second
Adam, Jesus. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive, 1Corinthians 15:22. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam (Jesus) was made a quickening spirit, 1Corinthians 15:45.
As confidence in Genesis, the foundation for all Biblical doctrines, is
chipped away, the truth of the rest of the Bible will also be rejected.
Most of those people who start out believing the Bible, but end up
rejecting it, virtually always start out by accepting some kind of
compromise regarding Genesis.
This really shouldn't come as any surprise. The same God who gave us the Bible tells that All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Timothy 3:16. God is telling us that His Word is indivisible. Those
who reject some part of God's Word will almost always end up rejecting
all of it.
